A politics waffle!
Feb. 3rd, 2020 12:25 pmSo Brexit. As far as I know, out of people I personally know, it was about 98% remain 2% leave, which is an interesting skew given the general populace. Myself, I was aware of the failings of the EU (e.g. just look at some of the farming subsidy corruption in some countries), but was vastly more in favour of remain and reform, rather then rage quitting, especially as we had the influence to push for it. Also, if we are going to have to abide by EU laws for trade, we might as well have a say in those laws. Not to mention the freedom to live and work in lots of lovely countries!
Regardless of peoples' opinions one way or another (unlike a lot of people I get why people voted different ways and am not going to banish people who think differently to me), I personally feel that this can only be made good if the UK really and wholeheartedly seizes on the opportunity to *try to be better*. That is, have the very best environmental laws, welfare standards, heathcare, education, and a thousand more aspects that it is possible to achieve. Absolutely strive for awesomeness.
But then I look at the vast majority of our politicians, and realise, they don't want the best for the country. They just want what is best for themselves. I don't trust them to take what could be the biggest test for us all since the second world war and turn it into something good. All I can see at the very best, is the rich getting vastly richer, and the poor being left behind. Worst case scenario, some kind of werid, inwards-focused (and therefore vulnerable), overly nationalistic dystopia with millions of avoidable deaths. Perhaps Brexit could have been OK with a decent government, but we don't have one of those!
